B.C. has highest number of active COVID-19 cases in three months

Number of new cases continues to be high, although there has not been a pandemic-related death so far this month in B.C.
B.C. provincial health officer Bonnie Henry spoke to media earlier this week

Government data shows 472 people battling COVID-19 infections in B.C. – more people than at any time since May 11.

The number of active cases has risen for the seventh consecutive day, and what is driving the momentum behind the rise is a steady stream of new infections. On August 11, the B.C. government announced that there were 46 new infections. That is the eighth day this month that the number of infections has been at least 43. There were only two days in July where the number of new infections were that high.

There are now 3,444 people who have recovered from their battles with the virus.

The vast majority of those actively fighting the virus are self-isolating at home, but eight people are in hospital, with five of those in intensive-care units.

Some good news is that the province recorded no new deaths from the virus that has spawned a global pandemic. The last death from the disease in B.C. was recorded on July 31.

The breakdown of COVID-19 infections by health region is:

  • 1,232 in Vancouver Coastal Health;
  • 2,167 in Fraser Health;
  • 148 in Island Health;
  • 393 in Interior Health;
  • 100 in Northern Health; and
  • 71 people who reside outside Canada.

"There have been no new health-care facility outbreaks in the region," provincial health officer Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix said in a joint statement.

Outbreaks remain at seven seniors' homes in B.C. They are:

  • Holy Family Hospital in Vancouver;
  • Richmond Lions Manor in Richmond;
  • Dania Home in Burnaby;
  • Maple Ridge Seniors Village in Maple Ridge;
  • Derby Manor in Burnaby;
  • George Derby Centre in Burnaby; and
  • New Vista Care Home in Burnaby.

There is also one acute care outbreak at Joseph and Rosalie Segal Health Family Health Centre.

"There continue to be community exposure events; including ones in Vancouver Coastal Health and Interior Health, and on flights into and out of British Columbia," they said. "There are no new community outbreaks."

The outbreak at the Krazy Cherry Fruit. Co. in the Interior Health region has been declared over.
