LETTER - BIMS: Time for open-hearted conversation

Dear Editor, I was happy to read in Bowen Island Montessori School’s statement that they welcome discussion on topics of diversity and inclusion.

Dear Editor,

I was happy to read in Bowen Island Montessori School’s statement that they welcome discussion on topics of diversity and inclusion.

However, although I can appreciate that some confidentiality is required for their legal proceedings, I disagree that “the specifics of this case are not integral” to the discussion.

Among parents with preschool-aged children on Bowen, the rumour mill has been grinding for too long with misinformation and assumptions about this case.

The result has been a lot of anger and misunderstanding among families who might otherwise be developing positive relationships.

The only way to cut through the noise is to go straight to the source on both sides and ask the difficult questions until we can appreciate the whole disagreement.

Though there is safety in philosophical discussions about racism, we have a tangible and concrete situation in front of us that deserves calm and open-hearted conversations.

There’s no doubt that it may be painfully uncomfortable and awkward, but if we look beyond our own pride, every voice in the conversation has the potential to positively impact a Bowen child’s future education.

And isn’t that what matters most?

Sincerely,

Mary Chan
