Dear Editor,
Our community golf course, which hosted the recent BC Bantam Novice Provincial Championships, won 1st place in the event! The BC Golf officials, players, parents, attending golf coaches/professionals and USA college scholarship recruiters were in awe of its condition and spectacular setting. To a person they said, “it was certainly not awful here”!
We were treated to, if not spoiled by some spectacular golf by both male and female golfers, ages 8 – 14. Ilirian Zalli, a 14-year old carded a 63 on day one, tying the 5-year old course record set by Bryn Parry, a professional no less! It was a pure treat to watch so many youngsters play such high level and entertaining golf.
The players were not the only stars at or on the course. Frank Griffiths’ maintenance staff, including Spencer Grundy and David Bellringer, did an outstanding job preparing the course before the first day and each of the 3-day event. Our 30 volunteers did an amazing job supporting the BC Golf officials, receiving high praise from the players and parents for their dedication, professionalism and friendliness. (See display ad for their names). Nineteen billeted players and parents were dazzled by their eight BIGC member hosts who demonstrated our true island friendliness and hospitality.
A special thanks to Brian Park (Snug Cove General Store) for his support; Monaghan golf for theirs as well and Peter King for his charter bus service. As they say, “it takesmany hands to make a village”, so too it takes many volunteers to make an event a highly successful event. Our team of volunteers did an excellent job representing and promoting both the community and golf course. We can be sure our guests will spread the word about our hidden gem and will come back for more.
