LETTER: My dearest of dear stories

Dear Editor, This past week on Miller’s Landing, as I walked out of Ecclestone Road, right there in front of Angie McCollogh’s properties is one of the “Velvet Boys.

Dear Editor,

This past week on Miller’s Landing, as I walked out of Ecclestone Road, right there in front of Angie McCollogh’s properties is one of the “Velvet Boys.” I first heard that term from Rick Drew, and it refers to those lovely young bucks with velvet horns.

I’m in the habit of talking softly to them. This one stayed still as though listening. I looked up and right there was another, just a couple of strides away. As I begin including it in our “conversation,” I move across the street not knowing that deer number 1 was following me.

Then right there down over the bank is a third, and he also moves towards me. Then another comes out of a driveway and I found myself surrounded by four velvet boys. I continued softly talking to them as I walked on. I apologize that I do not have a huge bag of apples for them.

I reach the Eaglecliff/Miller’s Landing Corner and stick out my thumb. A beautiful young woman with blonde hair picks me up. She tells me she is a singer songwriter and as we reach my destination she asks if she can use my story in a song.

Sure, I say. Just a day in the life of one walking woman.
