LETTER: Resolutions prove council's support for affordable housing

Dear Editor,

It was with interest that I read your article entitled “New group on affordable housing to pick where others left off”.  I would like to provide a couple points of clarification.

Mr. Wake indicates “Then, we worked with successive councils to get it off the ground and we were just not embraced.  In 2012, we gave up and the group folded.”  In February 2012 Council adopted a resolution to proceed with the incorporation of the Bowen Island Housing Corporation (BIHC).  Staff were directed to advertise for the founding directors of the BIHC.  These founding directors were to complete the incorporation process. However, despite repeated advertising to garner membership on the BIHC, no one applied.  This included the members of the AHWG.

You also indicate in the article that “He has received extensive support from the public, but no official support from Council”.  Mr. Wake has been encouraged by both individual Council members and staff to appear before Council to present and outline his project.  He has yet to do so.  As a former councillor from Whistler, I am surprised that Mr. Wake does not understand that Council only has authority to speak through its duly constituted meetings.

Sincerely,

Kathy Lalonde
