Dear Editor:

The following is the text of a letter I recently submitted to the North Shore News (published on Oct. 12):

The key reason many people in the United States will vote for Donald Trump is America’s poor quality of public education. As Albert Einstein said: “Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.”

The substantial support for Trump in the presidential election campaign clearly shows a fundamental lack of critical thinking on the part of many American citizens. It also demonstrates the single most important step Americans need to take for the betterment of their society is to strive for quality public education.

The basic lesson to be learned from this presidential election is that a nation can only be truly free to the extent that it champions education – for it is the truth that makes us free and the path to the truth is education.

For Undercurrent readers who may not be aware, Bowen Island is a leader in championing education in British Columbia. Through pioneering grassroots efforts aimed at promoting and establishing the community school concept, Bowen was the first community to create a community school in the province.

That accomplishment alone is the mark of a truly great community.
