Opinion: Why the Undercurrent's graduation edition matters

The annual celebration of students' achievements is "our greatest concentration of accomplishments and hope for the future"
Bowen Island Class of 2036
The class of 2036 gathered Saturday morning for the annual photoshoot of Bowen Island babies. In what will seem like a few short years, expect to see their faces in the pages of the Undercurrent's graduation edition as the island celebrates their hard work and achievements.

I love this edition of the Undercurrent.

For me, it’s one of the reasons we have a paper. Because as much as I can wax on about municipal dramas or local controversies (which are important), community papers must be grounded in the people who read them. We try to recognize people throughout the year but the grad issue is, for me, our greatest concentration of accomplishments and hope for the future.

I love reading the submissions, some from the graduates themselves, others from proud loved ones, all of them excited.

And this is a particularly special grad issue for the Undercurrent staff. Tracey Wait has a son graduating (look for the Cruisers reference) and I have a close family friend graduating (look for the yellow roses). Celebrating loved ones’ accomplishments publicly is a particular perk of working for a newspaper.

Congratulations everyone.
