Dear editor,

I have spent more than 10 years, along with a number of fellow Friends of Mannion Bay members, helping to clean up Mannion Bay by resolving the boat problem – thereby returning respectability to the area and its beaches so that everyone can use these public amenities in a safe, friendly and environmentally friendly manner .

I applaud council for giving their recent unanimous approval to Bylaw 418 (Use of Beaches and Water Areas).
While most of us prefer less rather than more regulations, the abuse and misuse by a relatively small number of individuals over the past 10 to 20 years left the municipality with no other choice.

Those of us who must endure this situation 7/24/365, along with other islanders and visitors, were fed up and deserve better.

Bylaw 418 is a much-needed enforcement tool that will fortify and reinforce the authorities’ ability to deal with those whose conduct and activities are not in the best, safe, and enjoyable interest to the public at large. It is also a complementary enforcement tool for a Licence of Occupation (from the federal government for the entire bay), which is presently well into the application process.

Here’s to a better Mannion Bay for everyone.
