Sechelt resident James MacWilliam captured the NEOWISE comet from his deck at 3:15 a.m. on Monday, July 13, as the comet was rising just east of due north. The comet, named after the NASA Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (NEOWISE) telescope that initially spotted it in March, has been photographed around the world thanks to its rare brightness. According to NASA, the closest approach of the comet will be July 22. From July 13 onwards, the comet will be visible in northwest skies just after sunset, below the Big Dipper.
