Last Saturday evening we happy few who love performing art on Bowen Island, or at least rarely miss an opportunity to attend a performance, had the good fortune to witness a new outgrowth from an old tree with deep roots.

Cinnamon, the small, feral, long haired, ginger cat, who was at least 25 years old, passed away last week. He came to us many winters ago after wandering down the road to our garden; maybe to keep company with our own feral cat Malachy.

A hundred years have passed since the Treaty of Versailles marked the official end of the First World War. Bowen has grown from a population of 90 to a population of nearly 4,000 in the century since. The social and economic fabric of the island is fundamentally changed but the cenotaph still stands in the Cove, a reminder of those lost and the price of war. Who are we remembering and why? As we approach the end of 2019, we humans have got our work cut out for us. We not only need to reduce, re-use and recycle, we also need to rethink, refuse, re-cover, re-gift and repair.
