About 20 percent of people have some degree of hearing loss, and over the age of 65, one in three people have hearing difficulties. For many people, hearing loss is a natural part of the aging process, and the onset is so gradual that they aren’t aware their hearing is deteriorating.  The good news is that about 90 percent of people with hearing loss can be helped by wearing hearing instruments.  Modern hearing aids are inconspicuous and are programmed to suit a client’s particular hearing needs.
Recent studies have found that untreated hearing loss can affect brain function and structure.  Recommended preventative strategies to protect against Alzheimer’s now include regular hearing tests and treatment of hearing loss to guard against social isolation.
If you, or someone you care about, would like a hearing screening test or more information, please phone Colleen O’Neil at the Bowen Island Caring Circle, 604-947-9100, to make an appointment.
