Bowen student develops website to help young people find “the right” volunteer opportunities

High school students across British Columbia need to complete 30 hours of volunteer work in order to graduate. As Bowen Islander Nathan Beatty learned, part of the challenge to completing volunteer hours is  finding the opportunity, in particular, finding an opportunity -  one that is of interest and may even assist with future career goals.
“I know that a lot of universities and employers look carefully at students’ volunteer interests, so I really wanted to find worked that matched my goals,” says the Rockridge student.  “I realized other students were facing the same problem, so I turned my own search into a website to help others.”
Beatty, who is in grade 11, started building his website in September. In February he launched http://www.volunteam.info/.  So far, 30 organizations in North and West Vancouver as well as Bowen Island have listed volunteer opportunities on the site, Beatty says he wants to grow that number. Organizations interested in listing opportunities can contact him through the site.
Beatty adds, that in the future, he would like to be an entrepreneur and launch businesses and organizations similar to this current venture.
