As Cappy and I walked down the corridor toward his office at Boston University, I began to feel a bit intimidated after all, I was about to have my first meeting with the great Isaac Asimov, who even in 1964 was dauntingly famous.

We know the New Year is going to be a great one. It's the year the Bowen Island Arts Council (BIAC) turns 25 and that means it's time to celebrate arts and culture on Bowen Island.

For Bowen Heritage, 2012 was a satisfying year. We hosted the best-attended Applefest ever, including a Bowen Agricultural Alliance's farmers market.

Will December 21, 2012, mark the end of the world or an opportunity for transformation, as Bowen Island author Frank Kemble believes? The date has long held a special meaning for those familiar with Mayan prophesy.

There are two or three groups on Bowen who make sure that during this cold and dark but festive season, when there are pressures to give and rejoice, everyone has a chance to share in the bounty. One is the Christmas Hamper Fund.

Children lovethe holidaysand all the magic that they bring. For the past several years, the children at Bowen Island Preschool have been celebrating the spirit of giving at Bowen's own Knick Knack Nook re-use it store.

Many island residents choose to live on Bowen because they value the quality of life. But in times of accidents or failing health, they may re-evaluate their choice.

A big warm thank you to everyone who helped chill the North Pole this year at the Bowen Community Recreation's Breakfast with Santa. The event was made special with visits not only from Santa Claus but also from the Chillbillies and Shari Ulrich.

Last Saturday was the first Photos with Horses event.Why go to the mall? The afternoon was clear and cold, the hot chocolate and coffee were warm, and the cookies delicious. We had a steady stream of kids, parents and grandparents.
