The Bowen Island RCMP responded to 39 calls for service in November of 2020;

  • 9 of those files were related to traffic complaints or enforcement;
  • 2 of those files were break-ins to residences;
  • 3 of those files were requests to check a person's well-being;
  • 1 of those files was assisting the Fire Department with a house fire;
  • 1 of those files was a traveller who was issued a ticket under the Quarantine Act for failing to isolate upon their return to Canada;
  • 1 of those files was a report of a deer who appeared injured after an altercation with a dog.

I watched Home Alone last night, and it made me think about the importance of home security. Break-ins may seem unlikely this year given that we will all be home for the holidays and unable to travel but a few quick tips can help ensure that you don`t need the help of a quick-witted eight-year-old to deter crooks:

  • Ensure that you always lock your doors and windows;
  • Use dead bolts and have doors that close properly;
  • Illuminate exterior lights to deter someone from prowling around the exterior of your residence;
  • Update your neighbours if you will be away from your residence for any period of time (ie. shopping in the city, not heading to the interior to visit family).

Please have a safe and happy holiday!
