Two islanders have received top honours in a Metro Vancouver-wide community hero contest for taking Bowen residents’ safety to heart.

A seafaring fugitive ended his four-day-long crime spree by breaking into a Bowen Island residence early Sunday morning and crawling into bed after allegedly stealing boats from multiple islands stretching from Salt Spring to the Sunshine Coast.

“Tell your friends it’s awful here” – this is now Bowen’s official slogan, so get used to it. The tongue-in-cheek catchphrase is complemented by the island’s official mascot: a hand-drawn deer character.

Organizers of the “gruelling” annual Round Bowen Challenge are hoping the weather co-operates for the big race on Saturday.

It was an all-day, all-ages affair Saturday as the Bowen Island Legion celebrated its 80th anniversary. There was a free community carnival with activities and food for the kids during the day.
