In the Community

It is a story about a young African girl with a dream. With the help of people in her village as well as far away, that dream came true and had a far-reaching positive effect.

Following on the highly successful and enjoyable sustainability tour in 2011, Bowen in Transition has organized another tour for 2012, with a different itinerary.

At the end of June,BICS students had the opportunity to participate in the 'It's a Wrap!' program; a nutrition and garden feasting event. Students explored the idea of growing a complete meal in the school's garden that is good for the whole body.

Questions and answers with Bowen grower Marg McConnell who operates Bowen Brook Farm with her husband Drew Burgess. They will sell their organic, island-grown produce at the BowFEAST community farmers' market on Saturday, July 21, from 9 a.m.

Since 2003, 40 Bowen Island Community School students have received a gift of books from the Carolynne MacNeil Memorial Gift of Books trust fund. Carolynne grew up on Bowen Island and worked at the Snug Cove General Store for many years.

The girls arrived well before the start of the event. They gathered in circles and were singing and dancing when the organizers arrived. Then they discussed futures that might hold possibilities they hadn't dreamt of.

Until now the Community Cupboard has been operated by Adrienne Lawson. Starting on July 3, the Bowen Island Library will be taking care of requests for the free loan of such items as walkers, wheelchairs, crutches and other health help equipment.

We are an aging society. The latest census confirms this and Bowen Island is no exception. The island needs extended care assisted living facilities for seniors.
